Shaped By Sound-adjustable acoustic wall
Are musicians shaped by spaces, or spaces shaped by musicians?
As both a musician and a designer, I have wondered how environments influence the way musicians practice, perform, and feel. This curiosity led me to investigate musicians’ daily routines and rethink how practice spaces could better encourage both artistic expression and personal well-being.
Through a survey inviting musicians to imagine their ideal practice environment, certain ideas appeared repeatedly in the responses, emphasising good acoustics, sound isolation and visually inspiring surroundings. In response, I developed an adjustable acoustic wall conceptualized by the idea of frequencies, merging functionality with sensory experience.
The system is composed of three layers: recycled sound-absorbing material, a living moss surface that provides additional absorption and biophilic connection, and sculptural wooden planks shaped by sound-wave geometries. By rotating and repositioning these wooden elements, musicians can modulate the room’s acoustic character, shifting between drier or more reverberant acoustic.
This fully functional acoustic wall, doubles as an artistic installation, transforming music into a three-dimensional spatial element, and the instruments which produce the music into an orchestral sculpture.
