That child they call “me”

June works conceptually with themes of nostalgia drawn from her own childhood and memories, which manifest across a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture and, primarily, time-based media.

The work entitled That child they call “me” is driven from the artist’s curiosity on the disassociation that occurs between the childhood self, and what can be understood of it from the adult self. The process stems from a desire to bridge the gap through the recreation of spaces and objects tied to familiarity.

The very attempt to recreate these memories exposes a desperation as cardboard furniture, covered in Dutch newspaper and disguised with paint, can never truly become a Cypriot home.

The masks within the work function as self-portraits, exaggerated versions of the artist’s identity across time. Their wearability becomes significant as it suggests the uneasy act of attempting to step back into a former self that can never be fully recovered, or allowing others to do so.

When encountering images of ones childhood self, there is a chilling sense of estrangement for the person looking back. There is a disturbance, a dissonance between personal memory and the narratives that have been told, shown, or reconstructed over time. The terrain of childhood memory is a space both intimate and unreachable, familiar yet far away from the adult self.
