Between The Fragments, Space About Remembering And Overcoming
Between the Fragments responds to the often invisible emotional burden carried by family members of dementia patients. Through research into anticipatory grief and sensory perception, the project investigates how architecture can create moments of pause, reflection, and grounding during emotionally demanding moments.
Project Between the Fragments explores the relationship between emotional experience and physical space. I am interested in how spatial design can influence our mental state through sensory elements such as light, sound, materiality, and atmosphere. Rather than focusing on function, I aim to design spaces that acknowledge human vulnerability and support emotional well-being.
By working with elements such as distorted reflections of water, tactile elements, and the interplay of light and shadow, the design translates psychological processes into spatial experiences. My graduation work is focused on creating a pavilion, which would be part of an Alzheimer's care facility and would serve visitors as a quiet space for emotional regulation. From preparation through reflection and acknowledgement, ending with acceptance, family members and caretakers of Alzheimer’s patients are able to have their own space in which they are able to leave their emotions behind. This pavilion serves as a transition space between emotionally demanding visits and the real world outside the care facility space.
