Nature as a Teacher

Carli Giliomee is a designer exploring the relationship between children, nature, and learning environments, informed by her upbringing in South Africa where photography and camping shaped her sensitivity to detail and the quiet wonders of the natural world.
Her work positions nature as both inspiration and educational tool. Central to her practice is the question: how can nature be used as an active learning tool within educational environments?
For her graduation project, she builds on a book published by Gemeente Groningen, ‘Schoolvoorbeeld Aanbevelingen voor Scholenbouw in Groningen’ (Textbook recommendations for school architecture in Groningen). Contributing 3 proposals for nature-based learning in the hallway, classroom and outdoors.
Through her project she is advocating for curiosity, wonder, and exploration as foundations for education. She aims to foster lasting relationships between children and nature, promoting a generation that not only learns from nature but also feels a responsibility towards its preservation.
