Spatial Design

Population density and its Impact on quality of life on a urban scale in the Netherlands

Altay is a Spatial Design student at the Minerva Art Academy in Groningen. His interest in design comes from a strong curiosity about how spaces influence human experience, interaction, and everyday life. Studying in the Netherlands has allowed him to explore architecture, urbanism, and sustainable design within a country recognized for its innovative approach to housing and city planning. As a designer, he is interested in creating environments that are both functional and socially meaningful. Throughout his studies, he aims to further develop his skills in spatial design and architecture while building long-term professional connections in Groningen and the Netherlands.

His current project focuses on urban density and quality of life through a case study of Gedempte Kattendiep 150 in Groningen, the former casino site located in the city center. The project investigates how population density affects housing, public space, safety, and social interaction in dense urban environments. With the Netherlands facing a growing housing shortage and increasing pressure on city centers, the project explores how sustainable densification can improve living conditions while maintaining accessibility, individuality, and green space. By focusing on net residential density at the district scale, the study examines how underused urban land can be transformed into a more livable and inclusive environment for residents.
