Zit nou eens Stil!
Iris Dijkhuis (2000) is a visual artist and educator based in Groningen. In her practice, she investigates how a physical experience can contribute to understanding, communication, and knowledge transfer. What happens when thinking is literally set in motion? And how can a physical action lead to insight?
Starting from personal experiences and observations within education, Dijkhuis makes mental processes tangible through installations. These installations arise from a direct, intuitive working method in which thinking and doing are inextricably linked. Ideas are not first elaborated but explored through the act of making.
Everyday objects, such as chairs, are used in her practice as carriers of meaning. By deforming and reinterpreting them, she invites the viewer to physical participation. The work is not merely to be looked at; it must be experienced. In this way, Dijkhuis creates space for reflection and an open dialogue on the themes the work touches upon.
A frequently recurring subject in her practice is ADHD, through which Dijkhuis uses her own experience as an entry point for broader visibility and understanding of neurodivergence.
As a special education teacher, Dijkhuis sees firsthand how diverse learning needs can be. The combination of her practical and personal experience fuels her artistic research. This research does not primarily seek ready-made answers but rather aims to explore new forms of perception and understanding. Her work functions as a bridge between art and education, where physical experience and societal questions converge.
