Vignettes
Wybren Schilstra (born April 27, 2001) creates work that ranges from acrylic paintings to digital illustrations that are produced as silkscreen and riso prints. Various fascinations and themes recur in his work, such as everyday events, architecture, human figures, and especially the local pub. He is fascinated by moments that at first seem unremarkable but take on meaning once they are captured and depicted. This fascination plays a central role in his graduation project.
The traditional brown cafe is a key subject in this context. In his view, it is a place where life converges: a space where different people meet and where stories are born. At the same time, it is a place that seems to be slowly disappearing. Through his work, he aims to make these cafés visible and preserve them, so that people can recognize themselves in them or experience a sense of nostalgia. In doing so, he depicts both city and rural cafés, drawing from his own background straddling those two worlds. His images are characterized by soft colors, large forms, humor, and small visual details that invite the viewer to linger. Through his graduation project, Wybren aims to share a piece of his fascination with the traditional brown cafés
