My name is Roosmarie Tuinenga. My work consists of watercolor illustrations combined with fabric, embroidery, and collage elements to create more depth and dimension. Storytelling is central to my work, in which I illustrate (children’s) stories about feelings and experiences that often remain unseen or unspoken.

In my graduation project, “Can You See Me Too?”, I focus on children who grow up with a sibling who has an intellectual or mental disability. These children often sense that their sibling needs more attention, causing them to sometimes put themselves last so as not to burden their parents further. As a result, their feelings and needs often remain unseen. Based on my own experiences within my family, I feel a strong personal connection to this topic. Through my illustrations, I want to create space for these silent emotions and draw attention to children who feel they must make themselves invisible, so that they can find recognition, understanding, and the sense that their story matters too.
