Meerle Burg (2004) focusses on the feeling of home and being at home somewhere. By combining personal experiences with research, she makes work that you can take with you to always carry a part of home with you. This fascination for home came to be, because of an intense feeling of homesickness to a place that is no longer home, but where Burg still longs for. Starting from exploratory drawings and own experiences, Burg makes cardboard houses in varying sizes. A material that is usually used for moving objects, is now used to portray something permanent to show a stark contrast. Besides cardboard works, Burg makes textile carrying objects, a soft and protecting material. This way, homesickness and nostalgia are tangible.
As art-educator she recognizes that it's easier to work in your own environment than at school, but still, she wants to minimize this difference. By imitating the feeling of "home" in the classroom, Burg hopes to stimulate the students to work as freely as they do at home.
