A Field Guide of Emotional Creatures
Marenne Klaster is an Illustration Design student whose work focuses on nature, mixed media, and tattoo-oriented illustration. Her passion lies in tattoo design, and she aims to continue developing her practice as a tattoo artist. Her work is strongly inspired by plants and animals, though these natural forms are rarely represented realistically. Instead, she combines different visual elements into new shapes through collage. By collecting images of animals, plants, textures, and organic structures, she constructs new compositions that function as the starting point for her illustrations and tattoo designs. These works often exist as individual pieces, but are usually developed within a larger thematic collection. Bringing these designs together in the form of a book has therefore become a recurring and important part of her practice.
This approach naturally shaped her graduation project, A Field Guide of Emotional Creatures. The project is a handcrafted field guide exploring six emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust. Each emotion is represented by a creature constructed from symbolic animals and plants, based on both research and collective associations. Combining illustration, storytelling, biological studies, and observational pages, the project visualises emotions as living organisms within an inner ecosystem.
The medium of collage is not only used as the starting point for the creature designs, but is also integrated into the physical construction of the book itself. Throughout the project, she combined multiple techniques and materials, including laser cutting, intaglio printing, relief printing, riso printing, and handbinding. Through these mixed printing techniques, handwritten elements, layered materials, and collage-based layout, the book becomes a mixed-media object that is an extension of the emotional ecosystem it represents.
