Architecture as the Foundation of Home
How can the feeling of home be created in student housing? As a spatial designer, Mafalda Veiga dove into the concept of student housing in the Netherlands and researched the impact that such living environments have on international students. Her research stemmed from a curiosity about the architectural role in the creation of home and how that can be translated into temporary social living. At a time when student housing is increasingly shifting toward private studio-based living, often prioritizing independence over community, Mafalda questions how spatial design can still foster connection and belonging. With a key focus on creating a sense of comfort and belonging for students coming from abroad, she re-imagines student housing layouts and encourages a balance between private and social spaces, emphasizing the importance of social interaction in fostering a sense of home.
