Design - Spatial Design

Traces of presence

As a spatial designer, Ioana Chelu is interested in how environments shape perception, emotion, and memory. Her work moves between different scales, from small material studies to larger spatial experiences, focusing on how light, texture, sound and structure influence how space is felt and remembered. She aims to create environments that are both functional and sensorial, encouraging people to slow down and become aware of their surroundings.

Traces of Presence explores how space can evoke and preserve happy memories through subtle shifts in atmosphere. The project takes the form of a corridor defined by three sequential frames, moving from compression to expansion and back again, creating a spatial rhythm that encourages awareness. Translucent fabric and diffused light soften the structure, allowing boundaries to blur and moments to feel suspended in time. The work suggests that memory is not fixed, but can be activated through spatial conditions, turning short experiences into feelings that stay with us.
