Trapped by design
A slot machine disguised as a plush toy — a metaphor for the subtle ways companies use psychology, behavioural economics, and emotional attachment to pursue profit-driven interests.
This project explores how cognitive biases and persuasive design strategies are embedded into contemporary product ecosystems to shape consumer behaviour, encourage repeated engagement, and normalise overconsumption. While often presented as harmless optimisation or entertainment, many of these techniques operate below the threshold of conscious awareness.
Through this installation, Ilya aims to raise awareness of manipulative design practices while questioning the ethical responsibilities of designers working within profit-oriented systems. At the same time, the project argues that the same psychological principles can also be used ethically — to educate, support, and create meaningful emotional experiences.
100% of the funds raised through this installation will be donated to charity.
