Mien Dörp

Bente van Spijk (born 2003, Groningen) is interested in Dutch culture. She sees how charming, yet also how uncomfortable, it can be. She expresses this through illustrations and tapestries in which she literally softens the stories. In her visual language, Bente takes ordinary scenes and situations and, through alienation, hopes to allow the viewer to recognise them and see them in a different light. In her graduation project ‘Mien dörp’, Bente shows village life in North Groningen. She was inspired by her childhood in Bedum and by old archive photos. In her wall pieces, she wants to show recognition, discomfort, and beauty. By combining these images into a new landscape, she hopes viewers will look at the North Groningen landscape with a new perspective.
