Xenotown
Abel Verberne explores textures in motion as a multimedia animator. Utilizing their skills with different software, hardware and traditional methods of animation they craft animated stories exploring topics of community, interpersonal connections and alienation.
XenoTown is a mixed media animation project that uses a plethora of techniques exploring themes of connection in unknown environments. 3D rendering, hand illustrated frames, ink drawings, plotting devices and more were used to bring this world to life.
The artist uses their research essay “Aliens and us” as a base for the project, in which our relationships to aliens is analyzed through the lenses of science, culture and loneliness. Different out groups, cultural beliefs, supposed encounters and multiple forks of scientific thought were studied to eventually base the story off.
The story on display is the first part of a planned four chapter film. The story structure is based on the system of alien belief development within our society, as formulated within the research essay. The chapters in question are the following: the experience, the memorate, the legend and the belief.
