Psychology of a Tadpole: a Chilean Tragicomedy

Psychology of a Tadpole is a tragicomic graphic novel by Ty Sánchez, a Queer Chilean illustrator. This memoir blends traditional and digital techniques, creating a fluid aesthetic that mirrors the complex narrative it unfolds. The work explores Sánchez’s life story—spanning two continents, three therapists, and nine homes—through the lens of the fictionalized main character Renacuajo (Tadpole).

The first volume, exhibited at the Minerva Graduation Show in Niemeyer, focuses on the story of his three grandfathers, each of whom harbors a similar secret. Against this background, the memoir gradually unravels multiple perspectives, inviting readers to reflect on the impact of personal histories.

Sánchez’s art deconstructs complex social themes, reflecting a unique third-cultural perspective shaped by experiences across South America and Europe. By fusing art theory with intricate personal narratives, the work seeks to uncover patterns that contribute to social and personal healing.

This project exemplifies the author’s approach to developing narratives across series rather than standalone pieces. It explores the intersections of identity, culture, and personal growth, creating a visual narrative that resonates with diverse audiences and encourages introspection. The result is a body of work that is both visually striking and emotionally profound, serving as a bridge between personal experience and universal themes.
