World of Signs
Complicate the simple, simplify the complicated.
Pippa van der Weijden is a young artist who uses art to translate her perspective of common objects into absurd imagery that decontextualizes often overlooked everyday symbols and signs. The form her art takes can be described as visual puns, as she highlights the inherent playfulness of artistic expression. Just as signs transform complicated concepts to be comprehended by humans, she transforms convention into borderline stupidity. Her artworks are graced by the imperfections of the medium of cardboard, its inclusion mimicking a common place for pictography and other iconic symbols. In her world, the unimportant is key, and the important is meaningless.
