Van Binnen Naar Buiten
Nova Abma (2000) creates two- and three-dimensional abstract works in which she experiments with conceptual and minimalist approaches. She constantly seeks a balance between structure and spontaneity in her working method. Some works emerge purely intuitively, while others may be based on existing sketches, keeping her oeuvre versatile.
Consciously and unconsciously, she grapples with questions such as: What translations are possible to abstract human elements like faces, bodies, and inner feelings? How do I reflect my inner feeling and my affinity with the human in a work? Which artistic rules or themes do I impose on myself, and which do I break?
Nova’s artistic processes vary each time because she sets her own rules and then breaks them. By working in this way, she pushes her artistic boundaries. By reusing objects and materials like stair treads or metals, she creates experimental works in which these objects and materials are given new life. This process of construction and deconstruction results in layered and abstract compositions. Through abstraction, the work remains open to multiple interpretations, inviting the viewer to give their own meaning to the piece.
