I Don't Know how to Common

In an increasingly polarizing society where individual gain prevails over the common good, it is easy to lose each other. And where local connectivity lacks, the desire to belong somewhere grows. This project responds to this need by exploring the commons, a collective way of sharing the world through a comic book and an exhibition design.

The comic book illustrates the value of the commons through colorful illustrations and a humorous tone. The narrative connects autobiographical experiences of the maker, interviews at commons in Dresden and Groningen and literature research to a playful and moving story.

The exhibition design functions as a staged pop-up commons in which the comic is presented. Through illustrating typical objects of an urban commons, different principles of the commons are introduced. The design encourages visitors to contribute by adding their own knowledge and experience.
