The Absence of Presence
Artist Statement
For me, art begins where language falls short. It’s a way of expressing what words can’t fully hold—a bridge between inner truths and shared experience. I see art as a total language, one that communicates through images, sounds, silences, and sensations. It’s my way of asking questions, offering pause, and connecting with others on a deeper level.
About the Work
This immersive video installation explores the tension between mental overwhelm and the effort to stay present. Projected onto three translucent panels arranged in a triangle, the images overlap into each other. The piece unfolds in three chapters: unconscious presence, absence, and conscious presence. It begins and ends with the shadow of a bicycle—first in black and white, finally in color—reflecting a cycle of presence and distraction. Using imagery of bikes and reflections from personal experiences in Groningen, the work symbolizes both physical and emotional movement.
