Rick van Winsum

Rick van Winsum, stage name Rick Winsome, makes Dutch-language pop music. He was born and raised in Groningen. He is currently studying at the Academy of Popular Culture as a singer/performer. He loves music that blends different genres such as hip-hop, rap, rock and pop, as seen in the work of KennyHoopla, Landon Cube, Jaden and Willow.

He is an independent artist, recording his music himself, together with his producer, in a home studio. Just like Billie Eilish :)

He is working on a number of new tracks. Until they are released on Spotify, they are ‘works in progress’. He is also working on his live performances with his band.

Rick makes pop crossover music, meaning pop with clearly audible influences from various genres, such as rock, funk, R&B, hip-hop, and dream pop. He doesn’t believe in pigeonholing. He simply wants to make music he likes; individuality and self-expression are important to him. His songs are sometimes a mix of Afro beats and reggaeton, such as ‘Cuba Libre’, sometimes dream pop with an EDM beat, such as ‘Droomstad’, or heavy rock mixed with hip-hop,

such as ‘Angelina’. But a sensitive ballad, such as ‘Uit Je Schaduw’, or a funky pop-rock track like ‘Uitgelaten’ also suit him.

A key theme in his music is nostalgia for the 80s and escapism, with authentic emotions. These are important themes for Gen Z, to which Rick also belongs and which he aims to appeal to. In his music, you can hear the influence of EDM and drum machines on the drum beats, of hip-hop on the vocals, and of the 80s sound on the synthesizers, electric guitars and vocal harmonies.

His own distinctive sound therefore lies in the mix of genres and 80s nostalgia: pop with a rock vibe thanks to the guitars, and analogue synths reminiscent of the 80s. This makes his music stand out within Dutch-language pop music.
