Statement

It's a simple hardware hack that subtly changes the dynamics of the ubiquitous deathmatch mode in an effort to subvert traditional gameplay. The hack also serves to change the dynamics between the players. Restructuring the original ritual-combat as, on the one hand, the typical aggresive power-play and, on the other hand, a hypnotic experience of the beauty in the machine.

I've always been compelled to push the boundaries of what is accepted within a given medium. This seems to be the primary reason for my tendency to try many different modes of expression. From drawing, painting, sculpture, glass-blowing, video, installation, performance, net art, to video games, I continually strive to explore new areas. I am not satisfied with any one means of making. Just as there is no single, easy way to express the essence of ME, or anyone, there is no single, easy was for me to make art.

This has a tendency to give my work a rough edges. I'm always pushing the boundaries of what I know and what I've done. I'm not interested in making gleaming, faultless experiences. To see the physical limitations of the medium is to include the medium in the message.

Q&A

What is the very first thing you do when you walk into your studio each day?
Make coffee and read.

What is your drive for making art? (Is it a need? Does it help you think? Is it for yourself? Are you trying to tell someone else something? To whom?)
I think about these things that would be fun to make and I make them.

How to consume art?
With a bendy straw. Or like PAC-MAN. One yellow dot at a time with the occasional fruit/ghost for a balanced diet.

What function has (had) writing (the thesis) in your artistic process?
It's been an immeasurable help. For me the acts of reading/writing/thinking are synonymous with the act of making.

Which one of your fellow graduating students has in your opinion experienced the most remarkable development during his/her stay at the Frank Mohr Institute, and why?
Pascal Petzinger. He's had to overcome so many obstacles. And still remains one of the most determined and methodical artists I know.
